Creating Your Twitter Bio

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

You have 160 characters to complete your Twitter Bio. Your bio is critical. You have about 10 seconds to get people’s attention and communicate quickly to them who you are and how you can benefit others. Think of the Bio as letting people know what they can expect from you on Twitter. Here’s a little exercise to prepare for writing your Bio. Write a one sentence answer to each of these four questions:

What area of my expertise do I want to focus on with Twitter?

What do I do?

How do others benefit from my expertise and what I do?

What do I enjoy doing outside of my work?  (I call this the softer side of you!)

Include within these answers key words that people use on the internet to search for the expertise you are offering. If you need help with key words, go to Google and use their free key word search: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Conduct a key word search on the specific expertise you are promoting on Twitter. Several of these key words should be included within your Bio so that when people use search engines with these key words your Twitter account will come up.

You now have draft materials for creating your Bio. Save this version you just created. You will use it to create your Twitter Bio and use it as part on the Twitter background you will develop in the next step.

Write Your 160 Character Bio

For now, take this longer paragraph and the key words and put them into a 160 character Bio for your Twitter page. Make it interesting and yet provide enough information. When people read your Bio, you want them to say, “Sounds interesting, let me click on their site to learn more”.

To be continued, your comments are welcomed…
